On March 27, 2017, JEVS Human Services will host its 75th Anniversary Gala. As we celebrate our past and this wonderful milestone, we also want to bring focus to the future of the organization and people we serve.
When thinking about the months and years ahead, JEVS is focused on the next generation. Our priority is to ensure we are working toward ending the cycle of poverty by working with young people throughout the city and region. We want them to obtain the skills they need to compete in today’s labor force and find employment that offers living wages, especially as they start families.
Imagine a time when there are abundant opportunities for youth and career pathways that come with the education, training and supports necessary that lead them to good jobs. A time when no teenager or young adult feels confined by their circumstances, and the transition to independence is made easier with good planning, resources and encouragement.
This is the future we dream of and one that Vivian and Oscar (Ossie) Lasko–who will be honored during the Gala event–have supported for years through their philanthropy. In 1984, Lasko organized the Lasko Family Foundation. The Foundation’s interest in and support for JEVS Human Services came in pursuit of Oscar’s lifelong interest in effective vocational education.
The Foundation became a lead contributor to the construction of JEVS’ Orleans Technical College campus at Red Lion Road in Northeast Philadelphia, a career training facility that helps hundreds of youth each year to learn a trade and, oftentimes, are the first in their families to complete higher education. In addition, the Lasko Family Foundation has been the lead supporter of the Lasko College Prep Program for high school juniors in need, offering internships and advising to set them on the right path in their journeys to college.
We are thrilled to recognize the Laskos during our 75th anniversary, and hope you will become a partner in investing in these and our other youth programs by donating toward or attending our 75th Anniversary Gala. The event will not disappoint, as we are featuring special entertainment by 2017 Academy Award winner (and Philly native) Benj Pasek and current Broadway star Ben Platt.
