Achievement through Counseling and Treatment (ACT)

Operating under the JEVS network, Achievement Through Counseling and Treatment (ACT) operates two outpatient, state-certified opioid treatment facilities in Philadelphia, known as ACT I and ACT II.

Both JEVS ACT locations offer personal solutions and supports to adults seeking medication-assisted treatment for opiate abuse, including outpatient methadone maintenance services, individual, group, and family counseling, free and confidential HIV/AIDS testing, and more. In addition, Act II also offers employment services including GED classes, resumé workshops, and job placement assistance.

Meet Becky Shuhart: ACT Client and JEVS Human Services Strictly Business Inspiration Award Winner 2019

An accomplished high school track star and self-described “good kid,” Becky grew up miles from the streets of Kensington that would nearly claim her life. As a college freshman, she began experimenting with pills, which quickly led to a full-blown heroin addiction and numerous tries at recovery. Homeless, she found her way to treatment at ACT. She worked hard at her recovery and was a model patient, taking on a peer leadership role at the clinic while working part-time at a women’s recovery program.

“My life before coming to JEVS-ACT was drug infested, hopeless, suicidal. The program has helped me with the treatment to want to remain drug-free. ACT will save your life.”

ACT in Pictures

The stairs to the ACT II entrance at 1745 N. 4th Street read: "You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step."

ACT I is located at 5820 Old York Road. At either location, personal appointments are made to determine service needs and eligibility, and walk-ins are accepted Monday through Friday.

Each year in September, which is National Recovery Month, ACT clients and staff participate in the Philadelphia Recovery Walk.

ACT participants at the Recovery Walk celebrate their recovery and work to end the stigma surrounding substance use disorder.

At ACT, group therapy allows each participant to gain a deeper understanding of their disorder, while at the same time giving and receiving support to and from others in the group.
