Happy & Grateful Carpenters! Project WOW participant Gabriel A. (right) and a fellow classmate in the Furnishing-A-Future program proudly display their certificates of completion.

Gabriel A. says anyone who wants to change their life the way he did should consider JEVS Human Services Project WOW.

“My life was one of just working and working without getting to the next level. I decided to look into ways to improve my situation, and came across Orleans Technical College. I went there to inquire about a carpentry program, and I actually took and passed the entrance exam. But then realized I needed a high school diploma or GED. That’s when the Orleans rep told me about Project WOW.”

JEVS Project WOW (World of Work) is a program for Philadelphia youth ages 18–24 that provides free skills training, job placement assistance, and GED® /high school equivalency test preparation. It gives students support to help them launch successful careers.

“The program allowed me to understand goals are achievable, and that we can accomplish what we want in any aspect of life. It made a difference because prior to the program I didn’t complete any goals,” says Gabriel.

Recently, Project WOW partnered with Furnishing a Future, a workforce development furniture workshop that provides technical skills and job readiness training while creating quality furniture for families in need.

After Gabriel graduated Project WOW he was awarded a spot with Furnishing a Future, where he was able to further hone his fine carpentry skills. As he was completing that training, he received a job offer from SSC Distributors, a local firm specializing in architectural millwork and kitchen cabinetry. He accepted, and is now living his dream of working full time in carpentry.

“Project WOW changed my mindset and taught me to push myself. It gave me the support to change my life and be successful. Thank you to everyone at project WOW for everything!”
