Savannah Ensures JEVS Kids Have a Place to Sleep

Few of us can imagine what it would be like to sleep on a floor or sofa each night. Having a bed of our own seems like a “given” rather than a precious luxury. The unfortunate reality is that thousands of Philadelphia’s children are living without a comfortable place to sleep, including some of the children of JEVS Work Ready clients.

Savannah Brooks Lopez was already spending her Sundays volunteering with an anti-hunger community organization in Kensington, Pa. for her Bat Mitzvah project when she heard about JEVS Work Ready, which provides employment-oriented services to those receiving Public Assistance benefits. Her older siblings had found creative uses for their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs gifts too, and Work Ready’s need for beds appealed to Savannah’s interest in helping children and families.

With the help of JEVS, Savannah set up an online fund-raising page to promote her project and asked her friends and family to donate to her project instead of giving her gifts. People loved the idea and the donations poured in, eventually totaling nearly $5,000.

After such a successful fund-raising campaign, she decided that she wanted to include guests attending her Bat Mitzvah in the project as well. She and her mother provided pillowcases for the guests to decorate with stencils and fabric paint, preparing nearly 100 pillow cases to accompany the beds. This personal touch connected her guests to the families they were helping and helped the kids feel more at home in their new beds.

Savannah dedicated her Beds for Kids project to her Grandma Ros who was a reading specialist in an underserved school and believed that every child should have access to books. Savannah believes that every child should have access to a comfortable bed too, and thanks to her project, more of our Work Ready families are sleeping soundly tonight.

Thank you Savannah for all your hard work and dedication! Your generosity and caring are the reason JEVS continues to “make hope happen” in so many ways. Do you have a creative way of partnering with JEVS to help those in need? We would love to help!
