New Leash on Life USA

New Leash on Life USA is program where prison inmates are trained to care for and socialize at risk shelter dogs to enhance their adoptability while gaining job skills. Inmates attend workshops on life skills and job readiness, and many receive opportunities for paid internships in the animal care field when they are paroled.

Services 

  • Teaches inmates to train in obedience and socialize the dogs assigned to live with them 24/7
  • Upon parole, participants receive case management, life skills training, job readiness, job development, job placement assistance
  • Internship program serves as a pathway to full-time employment

Eligibility 

  • Interested inmates cannot have the following convictions on their cirminal record: animal cruelty, arson, or any type of sexual-related crime
  • Inmates at Philadelphia Department of Prisons serving 11½ to 23 months

Enrollment

Referred through Philadelphia Department of Prisons social worker and District Attorney’s office.
