Volunteer Profile

For National Volunteer Week, we spoke with Vaughn Brown, a committed volunteer at JEVS Human Services about his experience.

Q: You could choose to spend your time with many organizations. Why do you volunteer at JEVS Human Services?

A: I spent several years working in Philadelphia for a large retailer. On my first day in a new role, I connected with a JEVS employee, Evelyn Morales. Evelyn was energetic, welcoming, and eager to build a partnership.  Evelyn became an essential business partner with whom I worked to find career opportunities for her clients, who are people having a hard time finding employment.

Over time I met more of the JEVS team and I’ve been so impressed. Everyone within the JEVS organization has displayed dedication, passion, and commitment to making a difference in the community.

Q: What kinds of volunteer activities have you participated in? Do you have a favorite and, if so, why?

A: I’ve participated in career readiness workshops for JEVS clients, helped to pack winter essentials care packages for their families, and recently had an opportunity to lead a team of volunteers to help reorganize the JEVS Thrift Store which provides clothing for clients.

I have enjoyed the opportunity to connect with folks and help them learn how to best showcase their experience and talents with prospective employers. I’ve had the pleasure of hiring a few individuals for employment. It’s inspiring to see how far a little help can go just by offering time and attention to those who need an opportunity.

Q: What would you say to others thinking about volunteering at JEVS?

A: I would encourage everyone to volunteer with JEVS. A little time goes a long way. While being able to donate items or money to JEVS is appreciated, time and support is welcomed just as much!
