At JEVS Human Services (JEVS), the Franklin C. Ash Internship program provides an opportunity for driven students to gain professional experience in the nonprofit sector.
The Communications and External Affairs team welcomes Maggie C., a student at American University, where she is majoring in Communications, Legal Institutions, Economics, and Government.
What made you want to do an internship at JEVS?
I am interested in the intersection of public policy and community impact, and I’m passionate about juvenile justice. I was drawn to JEVS because of its mission to create pathways to independence for youth and adult participants in its programs. This type of investment in communities empowers individuals to pursue their career and education goals. Growing up in the Philadelphia area, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges that communities face, which sparked my interest in nonprofit work. After learning more about JEVS, I knew I wanted to contribute to the organization’s mission and amplify its successes to a broader audience.
What has been the most exciting part of starting your internship?
The most exciting part of my internship so far has been learning more about JEVS’s impact on the local area. I have had the opportunity to research each of the programs that serve so many people, including youth and adults looking to reenter the workforce. It was powerful to hear the various success stories and learn about the people JEVS supports. Attending the Work Ready Graduation also gave me a chance to hear directly from participants about their JEVS experiences.
What do you hope to learn or do while you’re here?
The Communications and External Affairs team at JEVS manages a variety of different projects and content. I am interested in learning how to apply my skills in a professional communications setting and learn from experienced professionals in the field. While at JEVS, I hope to gain a greater understanding of the role that communications play in engagement and storytelling efforts. During my internship, I will be working to repurpose existing content and create new forms on other platforms, such as YouTube and Instagram. I am excited at the opportunity to help share the impact of JEVS programs with a wider audience.
