Some events leave you informed. Others leave you inspired. The Accessibility at Work Summit, hosted by the Delaware Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), did both. It was an honor to join so many passionate leaders, advocates, and practitioners who are committed to creating workplaces where every person has the opportunity to succeed, contribute, and belong.

Throughout the day, one message resonated deeply: accessibility is not simply about compliance, policies, or accommodations. It is about people. It is about the talented employee who finally receives the support they need to thrive. It is about the job seeker who is given an opportunity instead of being overlooked. It is about creating workplaces where individuals are recognized for their abilities, potential, and contributions—not limited by barriers that can and should be removed.

Accessibility is one of the most powerful expressions of inclusion. When organizations intentionally create accessible environments, they send a clear message: You matter. You belong. Your talents are valued here.

The conversations at the summit reinforced something I have witnessed throughout my work in disability employment: when we invest in accessibility, everyone benefits. Teams become stronger. Innovation grows. Cultures become more compassionate. Organizations become better places to work.

What inspired me most was hearing leaders share their commitment to moving beyond minimum requirements and embracing accessibility as a core value. The most inclusive organizations do not ask, “What do we have to do?” They ask, “What can we do to ensure every individual can reach their full potential?”

As our workforce continues to evolve, accessibility must remain at the center of how we think about talent, leadership, and opportunity.

After all, disability is part of the human experience. At some point in our lives, many of us will experience a disability ourselves or support someone we love who does. Creating accessible workplaces is not about helping a few people; it is about building a future that works for all of us.

I am grateful to SHRM Delaware for bringing together voices that are helping drive meaningful change and for creating a space where important conversations can lead to action.

The journey toward inclusion continues, but events like this remind us that progress happens when people come together with a shared purpose. Together, we can build workplaces where barriers become bridges, differences become strengths, and every individual has the opportunity to thrive.

Because accessibility is not just about opening doors; it is about ensuring everyone can walk through them with dignity, confidence, and the opportunity to succeed.

Thank you, SHRM Delaware, for your leadership and commitment to advancing disability inclusion and accessibility in the workplace. The impact of this work extends far beyond our organizations—it strengthens families, communities, and lives.
