Isiah

A Bright Future Building

Meet Isiah

Isiah grew up in Northeast Philadelphia, raised by his grandmother when his parents’ addiction made it impossible for them to care for him. Frustrated and bored by brick and mortar education, he was enrolled in an online education program in 7th grade. With little structure at home, this was not the answer. When he returned to a traditional high school, he spent more time in suspension than in class. He dropped out and worked a series of low-wage fast food jobs. After five months of working at Burger King, Isiah realized he needed a high school diploma to have any career success.

Motivated by the bright future in building homes that lies ahead of him, Isiah now channels his personal successes to help his peers academically and to mentor the youth in his neighborhood.

His brother, a plumbing and heating student at JEVS’ Orleans Technical College, mentioned JEVS Project WOW (World of Work), a free program that offers 24 weeks of skills training, job placement assistance and GED test prep to earn a degree. Desperate for his GED and with a spark for a career in the trades, Isiah enrolled, excelled and earned his Commonwealth Secondary School Diploma. From there, he received the Lee Casper Scholarship to attend the carpentry class at Orleans Tech.

He graduated in May of 2019 destined for a career in the trades. Motivated by the bright future in building homes that lies ahead of him, Isiah now channels his personal successes to help his peers academically and to mentor the youth in his neighborhood.
