Committed to the Mission of JEVS: Meet Jill

With nearly ten years in her current role, Jill brings both experience and a strong passion for JEVS’ mission of helping individuals gain independence and economic security. As the Director of the Independence Network, her work reflects a long-standing commitment to inclusion, personal growth, and supporting others in leading self-directed lives. Read on to learn what drew her to JEVS, what advice she has for others, and what keeps her grounded outside of work.

How long have you been with JEVS?

I have been with JEVS for almost ten years; however, I also worked for JEVS between 1994 and 1998.

What attracted you to your role and JEVS?

When I learned about the JEVS Independence Network program model to me, I knew that it closely aligned with my core values. The program is committed to partnering with people with disabilities to support them in leading the life that they choose. It also helps our communities recognize that everyone benefits from diversity and inclusion. I have always valued the commitment of JEVS leadership to involve stakeholders at all levels of our work.

What advice would you give to someone interested in a career at JEVS?

The collective expertise and knowledge of the people at JEVS helps me to learn something new all the time – even after 30+ years of working. A career at JEVS promises lifelong learning and opportunities to grow personally and professionally.

What’s something that most people don’t know about you?

Family is everything to me. My three sons and husband help me to stay grounded in what is most important in life.

Essential Kitchen Safety Tips for Dementia Care at Home

By Thomas H.

Caring for someone with dementia at home requires awareness and patience. One area that needs special attention is the kitchen, where potential hazards can pose risks to their safety. By implementing simple precautions and strategies, caregivers can create a safer environment while maintaining their loved one’s independence. Here are some essential kitchen safety tips for caregivers of individuals with dementia.

Clear Clutter and Maintain Order

Keep countertops and surfaces clear of unnecessary items to minimize distractions and confusion. Clutter can overwhelm individuals with dementia and increase the risk of accidents. Organize cabinets and drawers neatly, placing commonly used items within easy reach. This simple step can enhance kitchen safety and promote a sense of familiarity.

Label and Color-Code

Labeling drawers, cabinets, and containers can help individuals with dementia identify items more easily. Use large, clear labels with bold lettering. Additionally, consider implementing a color-coding system for different types of items (e.g., red for cooking utensils, blue for cleaning supplies). Consistency in labeling and color-coding can reduce confusion and promote independence in the kitchen.

Install Safety Devices

Equip the kitchen with safety devices to prevent accidents and injuries. Install stove knob covers to make sure burners aren’t turned on accidentally. Automatic shut-off devices for stoves and ovens will minimize the risk of fire. Place non-slip mats near sinks and work areas to prevent slips and falls. These simple additions can provide an extra layer of protection for individuals with dementia.

Supervise and Simplify Tasks

Supervision is crucial when individuals with dementia are in the kitchen. Encourage them to engage in simple tasks, such as setting the table or stirring ingredients. Be sure to also provide guidance and assistance as needed. Break down tasks into manageable steps and avoid overwhelming them with complex instructions. By supervising and simplifying tasks, you can promote a sense of accomplishment while ensuring their safety.

Create a Safe Cooking Environment

When cooking with individuals with dementia, prioritize safety at every step. Use appliance timers to remind them when food is ready or when it’s time to turn off the stove. Choose simple recipes with fewer steps to reduce the risk of confusion. Avoid leaving cooking unattended and always supervise the use of kitchen appliances. By creating a safe cooking environment, you can minimize potential risks and enhance their kitchen experience.

Adding these kitchen safety tips to your caregiving routine can help protect individuals with dementia from accidents and promote their independence in the kitchen. Remember to maintain a supportive and patient attitude while assisting them with daily tasks. By prioritizing safety and adopting practical strategies, you can create a nurturing environment where your loved one can thrive.

Become a Lifesharer at JEVS: Change a Life, Enrich Your Own

“Being a JEVS Lifesharer takes dedication, compassion, and a willingness to embrace someone as part of your family. It’s not just about providing a home. It’s about creating a space where individuals feel valued, supported, and empowered to live fulfilling lives. Lifesharers are the heart of this program, and their kindness and commitment make all the difference.” – Paul DeVito, Vice President, Residential Services

What is the JEVS Lifesharing Program?

Lifesharing offers more than housing. It provides a home where individuals can thrive and grow. JEVS Lifesharing helps people with intellectual disabilities live with caring families in the community. The JEVS team helps lifesharing participants in the Philadelphia area find loving homes. It gives them the chance to be more independent, make friends, and feel included in family life. Participants pay a Room & Board fee that is based on income. Pennsylvania’s Medicaid Waiver program covers extra costs for those who qualify.

Who Can Join?

Lifesharing is for adults (18 and older) with intellectual disabilities who want to live in a family setting. To qualify, participants must:

  • Be an adult with an intellectual disability
  • Have Medicaid waiver approval
  • Be referred by a supports coordinator or county office in the five county southeast region of Pennsylvania or the Pennsylvania State Office of Developmental Programs

How Lifesharing Helps Individuals

Each person in Lifesharing gets support based on their needs. The program helps with:

  • Personalized Care Plans: Support that matches each person’s goals and dreams.
  • Community Activities: Fun outings, jobs, and hobbies to help participants make friends and grow.
  • Health & Wellness: Medical and therapy support to keep everyone safe and happy.

Become a Lifesharer

Lifesharers welcome people with intellectual disabilities into their homes, giving them a safe and caring place to live. They help build confidence, friendship, and independence by offering support and guidance.

Lifesharing is rewarding for both caregivers and those they support. Caregivers build deep relationships, make a real difference, and find joy and purpose. They also receive training, support, and financial assistance to provide the best care.

If you have a passion for helping others and a commitment to creating a welcoming home, you could be a great fit for Lifesharing. Want to learn more? Contact JEVS Lifesharing today!

Celebrating Community: Acrisure/Odell Studner Group Sponsors Grow with JEVS

By JEVS Staff

For decades, Brett Studner has supported JEVS Human Services (JEVS), helping the organization grow and serve the community. A former board member and current advancement committee member, Brett continues as a donor and advocate. As a Partner at Acrisure (formerly the Odell Studner Group), he and his organization are sponsoring this year’s Grow with JEVS. In this Q&A, he shares how JEVS creates opportunities and positively impacts the lives of those it serves.

1. What motivates Acrisure/Odell Studner Group to sponsor Grow with JEVS?

I am excited about every event that JEVS has where we can show the tremendous impact we have in changing lives for so, so many deserving individuals. For every person that gets involved & every additional dollar we can raise, JEVS can further impact our community.

2. What inspires you (or surprises you most) about JEVS’ work?

The incredible work that they do, along with the people – including JEVS employees, leadership, volunteers, and most importantly, the wonderful people they assist – creates an environment where tear-jerking positive stories are commonplace in the JEVS world. As a volunteer, JEVS is “work” that you feel & that makes all the difference.

3. How do you see the partnership between Acrisure/Odell Studner Group and JEVS?

Acrisure/Odell Studner Group has been serving the Philadelphia community for over 90 years and JEVS almost as long. Giving back to OUR community and helping people in need is part of our core values and culture. Doing so through JEVS, an organization that changes so many lives and lives our values, is an easy decision for us.

4. What would you say to encourage other businesses in Philadelphia to support JEVS’ mission?

JEVS does so much for so many in our community, but the one thing that attracted me the most was their commitment to help people help themselves. Unlike many other social service organizations that are awesome at assisting people with immediate needs (financial support and food for example), JEVS takes it one step further by teaching people how to pull themselves up, regain self-worth & self-confidence and fend for themselves.

Supporting the Mission of JEVS

Acrisure/Odell Studner Group’s support for JEVS demonstrates how community involvement drives meaningful change. To be part of the Grow with JEVS annual fundraiser, click here to purchase tickets. Announcing the JEVS Care at Home Caregiver of the Month Award

By Thomas H.

JEVS Care at Home is excited to announce our Caregiver of the Month Award—a special recognition to honor the dedication, compassion, and hard work of JCAH caregivers who go above and beyond to make a real difference in the lives of clients and their families. Each month, we’ll spotlight a caregiver who embodies the heart of our mission: delivering compassionate, high-quality care with unwavering commitment.

Follow us on Facebook (JEVSAtHome) or Instagram (@jevscareathome) where we’ll announce each month’s winner. Read below to meet our first two Caregiver of the Month Award recipients, Sarah Javier and Frances Loughran.

January 2025 Caregiver of the Month: Sarah Javier

Sarah is a caregiver on our Lehigh Valley team. Sarah cares for her clients as if they were her own loved ones in need of care.

Recently, Sarah began working with a client who had never received home care services before. The client’s family were anxious, but Sarah put their minds at ease the minute she arrived for her first shift. Sarah had reviewed the client’s Plan of Care; she knew the client’s needs and preferences, and she was well prepared to begin providing care. As the days and weeks passed, Sarah and her client developed a positive rapport. Sarah’s support has made it possible for the client to keep living independently in her own home.

Sarah J. January Caregiver of the MonthSarah received rave reviews from a second client who was especially particular about her caregivers. Soon after Sarah started working with her, the client, C.G., called the office to let us know how pleased she was. “Sarah is a keeper,” she said. “She comes in my door and takes care of everything. You don’t have to ask or tell her anything. She just knows what to do.” The client continued: “Sarah knows everything on my Plan of Care. She pays attention to detail with the cleaning and is there for anything I may need.”  On home visits with this client, it was clear that Sarah was making a real difference. She had helped the client with some projects, like going through boxes and putting knick-knacks back on display. The client was eager to praise Sarah and tell us how happy she was that Sarah was her caregiver.

We know that when Sarah walks through a client’s door she is bringing peace of mind to both the client and their family. Thank you, Sarah, for the difference you make every day! — Heather Fotopolous, Area Director, Lehigh Valley and Central PA

December 2024 Caregiver of The Month: Frances Loughran

Fran December Caregiver of the MonthJEVS Care at Home recognized Fran for her hard work and dedication to her client, Richard W. After Richard was hospitalized and admitted to a nursing facility for rehabilitation, Fran visited him a few times each week, unpaid. Fran advocated for Richard’s proper care while he was in rehab and ensured that he had a smooth transition home. Fran then helped our nursing team set up PT/OT and arrange for a visiting nurse. Fran knew how important these services would be in preventing a readmission. Fran is an outstanding caregiver and a true representation of what client advocacy looks like. We are lucky to have her on our JCAH team. –Kim St. Peter, Director of Health and Education
