JEVS Participants Volunteer with You Matter

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (WPVI) — “When it’s said sincerely, it’s the most essential message of our time,” said Cheryl Rice.

That saying, of course, is, “You Matter.” These two words were written on a card that Cheryl received seven years ago. And just a few weeks after that, she had a chance to pay it forward.

“I was in line at the grocery store, standing behind a woman in the checkout line and I overheard her tell the cashier her recent struggles,” she said. “I gave her a small card with only the words, You Matter. The woman started to cry and said, ‘You have no idea what this means to me.'”

From that moment forward, Rice committed to starting her own movement titled, “You Matter Marathon.” She founded a nonprofit and started giving away cards for free.

“The goal was to invite people to share one You Matter card a day during the month of November,” she said. “And we’ve grown. Now, we’re in 99 countries, which I still can’t believe, and the demand for cards has just grown exponentially.”

Now a year-long initiative with a special focus in November, the marathon encourages people from around the world to sign up on its website. From there, Rice and volunteers mail out cards at no cost.

Many of those volunteers come from JEVS Human Services, whose office in Philadelphia is home to programs that help individuals return to work and clear criminal records.

“What better message to our participants than to tell them that they matter,” said Executive Director of Justice Partnerships, Jeffrey Abramowitz. “Many are unemployed or underemployed, some facing challenges in the justice system.”

One participant of the Work Ready Program, Shawnna Kitchen, was surprised to receive a card today.

“Life is a struggle and we do have times where things are kind of hard,” she said. “But you know, I always have to keep a smile on my face because a lot of people don’t understand that we do matter.”

The You Matter Marathon has topped two million cards delivered around the world. To learn more about how to get involved, visit their website.

2022 NDEAM Outstanding Employer Award: Franco Fusaro, Virtua

Franco Fusaro

Franco has partnered with JEVS for many years. We first met him when he was with a major financial institution headquartered in NJ.

When Franco left a job, he never forgot JEVS. He made sure that he kept in contact with hireAbility Employment Specialist, Rhonda Rogers.

When he joined the Virtua Health recruiting team, Franco brought JEVS with him. He has been instrumental in assisting Rhonda by giving her clients the opportunity to enter the financial world, helping her clients through the entire process.

Franco was instrumental in assisting clients obtain an interview with Virtua and many have obtained long term positions. In addition to employment opportunities, for our clients, he hosts job clubs, conducts mock interviews, assists with client resumes and council’s clients on job preparation.

Franco makes time to assist JEVS with anything employment related.  He’s accompanied Rhonda to meet and greet events even when they start at 7:00am!

There is one attribute that cannot be manufactured, bought, copied, or underestimated, is the human spirit. Franco has that spirit, which is why we honor him with the Outstanding Service Award.

2022 NDEAM Award Recipients: Sodexo and Giovanny Galarza

Giovanny Galarza

Giovanny was referred to hireABility by his girlfriend. He shared that he had decided to go to college after graduating high school, but it was online and found it difficult without the in-person support. Gio decided to enter the workforce.

Giovanny was referred to the Department of Vocational Services (DVRS) when he chose JEVS hireAbility as his provider of service. Gio discussed several options for employment with his job coach Kim Callahan and applied to Sodexo, a food service company for the Atlantic City School District.

Gio was nervous but did great on his interview. He was hired by Sodexo in January 2020. Since then, Chef Joe Hendri has taken Gio under his wing. He is always there to support Gio and has given him many different tasks in the kitchen, all of which he has mastered.

Gio has a great work ethic and his commitment to his position. He is always offering to help co-workers or identifying a task that needs done and doing it. Gio received the first ever Employee of the Month Award!

The hireAbility team is so proud of Gio and how he values his position with Sodexo and how he has worked so hard to prove himself. Gio is not only making strides in his employment, but he is also taking steps to increase his independence at home.
