This National Volunteer Month, we are proud to highlight Mike Lacouture, a dedicated JEVS volunteer whose commitment to supporting participants through mock interviews has made a lasting impact. Mike first connected with JEVS through a community partnership event and quickly found himself drawn to the organization’s mission. What started as a single opportunity soon turned into an ongoing commitment. Through mock interviews at programs like Orleans Technical College, Mike has become a familiar and trusted presence for participants preparing to enter the workforce.
“Mock interviews help participants build skills that can change the trajectory of their lives,” Mike shared. “As a volunteer, you get to see that ‘aha moment’ when it clicks for someone and that’s what keeps me coming back.”
For Mike, volunteering is not just about giving back; it is also deeply rewarding on a personal level. “It’s as much for me as it is for the people I’m helping,” he said. “You feel good about it.” His own experiences have shaped how he connects with participants, emphasizing growth, confidence, and the importance of communication.
During his sessions, Mike encourages participants to reflect on their experiences and translate them into meaningful skills. He helps them see how even unrelated jobs can build a foundation for future opportunities, while building confidence and authenticity.
He also highlights the role of connections in interviews. “Half the interview is asking, ‘Do I want to work with this person?’” Mike explained. “Once you feel calm, your personality comes through, and that’s what makes the difference.” He reminds participants that interviews are a two-way street.
Mike also emphasizes that the sense of community makes volunteering at JEVS even more impactful. “It doesn’t feel transactional,” he said. The relationships he has built with staff and fellow volunteers have made the experience even more meaningful.
Whether participating in mock interviews or attending JEVS events, Mike continues to show up with enthusiasm and purpose. “You don’t always see the impact right away,” he said, “but you know you’re helping shape someone’s future.”
We are grateful for Mike’s dedication and the energy he brings to our programs. His story reflects what JEVS is all about, building community to help the community.
